Biodynamic Massage

Biodynamic Massage is one of the wide-ranging Body Psychotherapy techniques. It can be used both as part of a psychotherapy treatment or as a stand-alone method to connect more deeply to and invite your body to self-harmonise. It is a psychotherapeutic massage which was developed from methods used in Norwegian physiotherapy after clinical observations that attuned touch together with talking therapy could fast-track and enhance clients healing and transformation. As well as experiencing the overall wellbeing gained from traditional massage, Biodynamic Massage has psychotherapeutic benefits, offering clients opportunities to explore their inner world and it can be used as a means towards self-discovery. Biodynamic Massage rests on the premise that given the right circumstances, we have the capacity to self-heal and self-regulate.

Biodynamic Massage can be given directly on the skin or over light clothing. Comfort is paramount, a blanket is used for warmth and containment, and a stethoscope is placed on the client’s lower abdomen to listen for peristalsis – digestion sounds. These sounds indicate that the body’s parasympathetic (calming down) nervous system is mobilised, inviting the client to ‘rest and digest’ reaching a healthy balance between excitement and relaxation.

Biodynamic Massage can promote deep relaxation, improve circulation, encourage vitality, increasing energy levels and wellbeing. It can help to relieve chronic symptoms e.g. headaches, tensions, pains, digestive problems, insomnia and low energy.

There are various forms of Biodynamic Massage with different intentions. A trusting therapeutic relationship is important, clients need to feel confident enough with their therapist for insight and healing to occur. Therapist and client work together with curiosity, awareness and acceptance, inviting the client’s natural movement towards health and wholesomeness. Some Biodynamic Massage techniques are used to encourage more vitality, others to soften tight, stiff areas in the body or to invite embodied integration. Still other forms provide containment, inner strength and a sense of boundaries to clients who sometimes may feel easily overwhelmed.

Although clients may experience benefits from a single session, sustained changes occur with regular sessions over a period of months.

Biodynamic Massage can support a range of conditions; stress, IBS, muscular tensions, migraines, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, sluggish lymphatic system leading to low immunity, those who’ve experienced physical and/or emotional traumas, and those wishing to enhance their mind-body connections. Many clients report improved stress relief, better-quality sleep, less anxiety, improved digestion and circulation, greater ease of movement a sense of calm, well-being and relief.
